When I am in the hospital to visit my injured parent and I am restless, or start to get into things, what I may be saying is, “This is a little space with too many rules. I’m tired of ‘be quiet,’ ‘don’t touch,’ and ‘don’t do.’ ” You can support me by keeping the visit short. Take me to the waiting room, cafeteria, or even better, outdoors where I can play and talk. Show me what I can do, by having an activity bag of toys I can play with.
